Who attacked The World Trade Center and why?

The World Trade Center was attacked on September 11, 2001, by members of the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. The attack was carried out by 19 hijackers, who boarded four commercial passenger jets and crashed them into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.

The stated goals of the attacks were to:

- End American support for Israel and other pro-Western regimes in the Muslim world

- Punish the United States for its military presence in the Middle East and its support of Israel

- Drive American forces out of the Arabian Peninsula

- Topple the governments of Saudi Arabia and Egypt

- Unite the Muslim world under a single Islamic caliphate

The attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and caused more than $10 billion in damage. They were the deadliest terrorist attacks in history and had a profound impact on the United States and the world.
