How did the U.S get Texas?

Texas, along with the other lands of the Mexican Cession, was acquired by the United States as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo determined that the United States would pay Mexico the sum of $15 million for its claims to Texas and New Mexico, and would additionally assume its existing debt owed to American citizens while acquiring what would later be known as the Southwest Territories, consisting of present-day Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah.
