History of North America

How many slaves were there during the civil war?

The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution formally abolished slavery in the United States in December 1865. The Civil War, which took place from 1861 to 1865, was fought, in part, over the issue of slavery. At the start of the Civil War, there were approximately four million enslaved African Americans in the United States. The vast majority of these enslaved individuals lived in the southern states.
