Why was the Amistad incident instrumental in changing attitudes of Northerners about slavery South?

The Amistad incident did not change Northerner attitudes about slavery. Instead it intensified the debate around slavery. There were those in the North and the South who held various opinions on the topic of slavery. For example, some Northerners and Southerners believe slavery was a necessary part of the economy, while others felt is was morally wrong.
