History of North America

What were the roads made of during civil war?

The majority of roads during the Civil War were unpaved and made of dirt, gravel, or crushed rock. Some urban areas had cobblestone or wooden plank roads, but these were not as common. The condition of the roads varied greatly depending on the region and the weather. In dry weather, the roads could be dusty and rutted, while in wet weather they could become muddy and impassable. This made it difficult for armies to move quickly and efficiently, and often contributed to the outcome of battles.
