During the red scare of 1950s what was america afraid of?

The Red Scare was a period of time in the United States, starting in the late 1940s to late 1950s, when an unfounded belief of large numbers of Soviet secret agents and communist sympathizers, both real and imagined, were accused of infiltrating US politics, media, education, labor unions, Hollywood and other American institutions where they intended to subvert the public, politicians and civil organizations and sabotage the American cause.
