The first permanent British settlement in North America was located in the present day state of Virginia, in the region known as the Tidewater. The settlement was founded in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London and was named Jamestown, after King James I of England. The colony struggled in its early years, but eventually grew and prospered, becoming the first permanent English settlement in North America.
