The city of Richmond was considered important because of its strategic location, which provided direct transport routes inland. If captured, the Union had direct access to the South while simultaneously severing its connection to other Confederate regions (the Deep South, Carolinas, etc). However, it also proved to be strategically challenging for Union soldiers tasked with its occupation.
