History of North America

Is there slavery in the US today?

Yes, there is slavery in the United States today. The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1865, abolished slavery "except as a punishment for crime." This exception has allowed for the continuation of slavery in the form of prison labor, where inmates can be forced to work for little to no pay. It is estimated that there are over 100,000 inmates working in prison industries in the United States, and that many of them are paid less than $1 per hour. This system is often referred to as "modern-day slavery" or "prison slavery."
