What caused the flood in Galveston Texas 1900?

On the night of September 8, 1900, between 6:00 p.m. and midnight, a 15-foot (4.6 m) storm surge moved quickly across the flat coastal prairie west of Galveston, Texas. The high water killed an estimated 6,000 people, making the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
