What caused the Japanese emperor to have reduced power after world war 2?

A new constitution drafted by the US occupation forces

Provisions in the new constitution that curtailed the emperor's power:

- The emperor was defined as "the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people" and was stripped of all political power.

- The emperor's role was limited to ceremonial duties and he was no longer allowed to give political advice to the government.

- The emperor was no longer considered divine, and his status was no longer the basis for the legitimacy of the government.
