Why did the Battle of Okinawa lead to atomic bomb?

The Battle of Okinawa did not directly lead to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The decision to use the atomic bombs was made by President Harry Truman after the Potsdam Declaration, which demanded Japan's unconditional surrender, was rejected. The bombings were seen as a way to end the war quickly and save American lives, as an invasion of the Japanese mainland would have likely resulted in heavy casualties.
