Why was the Great Wall of China built and how it built?

The Great Wall of China was built primarily for defense purposes, to protect the Chinese Empire from invasions and raids by various nomadic groups from the north, such as the Huns, Mongols, and Manchus. Construction of the Great Wall began in the 7th century BC during the Spring and Autumn Period and continued over several centuries, with major contributions from the Qin and the Ming Dynasties.

How was the Great Wall Built?

The construction of the Great Wall involved a massive amount of labor and resources. Here are some key aspects of how the Great Wall was built:

1. Workforce: Millions of people were involved in the construction, including soldiers, peasants, convicts, and laborers.

2. Materials: The primary materials used were stone, bricks, earth, and wood. Stones were often taken from nearby mountains, and clay was used to make bricks.

3. Construction Techniques: Different construction techniques were used depending on the terrain and available materials. In mountainous regions, the wall was built by stacking stones without the use of mortar. In other areas, bricks were used, held together by a mixture of sand, lime, and sticky rice. The base of the wall was usually wider than the top, providing stability.

4. Watchtowers and Gates: Watchtowers were constructed at regular intervals along the wall to serve as observation and defense points. Gates were built to allow for passage and trade as well as for military purposes.

5. Labor: The labor force worked under harsh conditions, facing extreme weather, difficult terrain, and limited supplies. Many workers lost their lives during the construction of the Great Wall.
