Who was the first woman to become an astronaut?

The first woman to become an astronaut was Valentina Tereshkova. She was a Soviet cosmonaut who flew into space on June 16, 1963, on the Vostok 6 spacecraft. Tereshkova spent more than 70 hours in space, orbiting the Earth 48 times. She remains the only woman to have completed a solo spaceflight.
