Major Princely States of Bihar

Before attaining independence, there were many princely states in Bihar. Many of these had an independent existence during the Muslim rule. But the rulers from some princely states used to pay some taxes to the Muslim rulers.

Later, after the establishment of the British Empire, the independence of these princely states ended and their overlords were counted as zamindars. At that time an organization of these landlords in Bihar was the Bihar Land Holders Association, whose leader was the Maharaja of Darbhanga.

The two princely states Kharsawan and Seraikela were counted as native states till just before the attainment of independence. The number of major princely states (or zamindars) in Bihar before independence was about 25.

Srinagar

Rudranand Singh, the former king of Banaili dynasty located near Purnia, settled Srinagar about 3 miles away in the name of his son Raja Shrinand Singh. Srinagar was considered to be the best and visible in North India, including the palace and library of the capital, but was burnt to ashes in a fierce fire in 1932 AD.

Situated in the southern part of Munger, this princely state was founded by the Chandravanshi king Veer Vikramaditya of Bundelkhand in the second half of the 12th century. Puranmal, the tenth king of this dynasty, built a temple of Shiva in Baidyanathdham (Deoghar). After the arrival of the British rulers, Raja Gopal Singh took away the princely state.

Later his grandson Jaimangal Singh helped the British a lot at the time of Santhal revolt, due to which the British returned the princely state to him with the title of Raja.

Darbhanga (Mithila)

It was the best Brahmin state of India. The Maharaja here was considered to be the richest and most prestigious among all the landowners of India. The founder of this state was Mahamahopadhyay Pandit Mahesh Thakur.

Impressed by his scholarship or eloquence, the Mughal emperor Akbar gave him the kingdom of Mithila as a mark of respect. Maharaj Shiv Singh, Maharaj Laxmeshwar Singh, Maharajadhiraj Kameshwar etc. became other prominent kings of Darbhangaraj in due course of time.

Suryapura

Since the king of this ancient princely state had always been the Diwan of Dumraon King, so this Diwan ji's princely state is called. There was a special progress of this princely state during the time of Diwan Ramkumar Singh. His son Raj Rajeshwari Prasad Singh was the first to get the title of Raja.

He was the only Kayastha king of Bihar. His eldest son Raja Radharaman Prasad Singh became a famous Hindi writer and his younger son Kumar Rajiv Ranjan Prasad Singh was the Chairman of the Bihar Legislative Council before 1952.

Narhan

Vasanj of the famous king Puraditya of Saptari (Nepal) conquered Saraisa pargana of Darbhanga district of Ganga Rai and made his capital in a village named Gangsara. Later, due to the division of the kingdom of Saraisa among his descendants, many small princely states were established, in which Narhan was a major princely state. After the death of the princess of Narhan, the kingdom of Narhan was divided between the dynasties of Narhan and the king of Kashi. Thus half of Narhan Raj went under the authority of King Kashi.

Tekari

Sunder Singh, the son of Dhir Singh, the founder of this raj (princely state) located in Gaya district, assisted the Subedar of Bengal and Bihar in the battles of Sasaram (Shahabad) and Narhan (Darbhanga). Hence he got the title of Raja. Later, after the death of Raja Mitrajit Singh, the princely state was divided among his sons. The eldest son Kumar Hitnarayan Singh got nine annas and the junior son Kumar Modnarayan Singh got the share of persecution. Kumar Hitnarayan Singh became the Maharaja of Tekari.

hathua

This state was established by Virsen in Saran (Chhapra) district before the Muslim conquest of Bihar. In the 27th of this dynasty, King Khemkarna Sahi was given the title of Maharaj Bahadur by the Mughal court. In 1769, Hathua Naresh Maharaj Fateh Sahi raised the flag against the British rulers. Then the company had captured Hathua. But the people of this dynasty fought and maintained their dynasty. From the beginning, the capital of this princely state was in a village named Hosepur, that during the time of Chhatradhari Singh Sahi the capital was brought from there to Hathua.

Jagdishpur

Babu Kunwar Singh, the hero of the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, was the overlord (zamindar) of the princely state of Jagdishpur. His brother's descendants lived in nearby Dilippur. The effect of the struggle waged against the British under the leadership of Kunwar Singh from Jagdishpur, located about 35 km southwest of Ara, has also been felt in the neighboring Uttar Pradesh and Terai of Nepal.

Buxar

In 1577, Raja Dalpati became the king of this place. He became the most famous king of this royal dynasty. Later this princely state was merged with Dumrao Raja.

Gandhwar

The Gandharia people considered themselves to be the descendants of Parmar Rajput and the Karnat dynasty king of Mithila, Raja Nanyadev Singh. Oinwar dynasty of Mithiladhipati Maharaj Shiv Singh When it was destroyed, there was chaos in Mithila. Then the Paramaras established their kingdoms in places called Gandhwar and Bhaur in Darbhanga district. The people living in Gandhwar were called Gandhwarias and those who lived in Bhaur were called Bhaurshurias.

There were three main princely states of Gandhwariyaki - Sonbarsa, Baruari, and Panchgachiya. At that time all these three were in Bhagalpur district, but now it is in Saharsa and Supaul district respectively. Bhagwanpur in Darbhanga district had a special place in the small princely states of Gandhwarios.

Bhagwanpur

This princely state was in Angne at Chainpur in Shahabad district. The Rajput rulers here considered Takakshila as their original abode and the famous hero Porus as their ancestor.

But according to Shri Loknath Ghosh, the author of the modern history of Indian kings, the founder of this state, Laxmimal Chandravanshi, came from a place called Sakri near Delhi about 400 years ago and settled in Navagaon named Bhagwanpur in the then Shahabad district.

Bari

Pandit Narayan Thakur, a resident of Darbhanga district, had established the princely state of Burari from the jagir he had got in Bhagalpur district. The descendants of Narayan Thakur had 3 branches - the Datta branch, the Mohan branch and the Nath branch, out of which the Mohan branch had progressed a lot.

Baaghi

Situated 15 miles south of Muzaffarpur, the prince of this princely state was Rai Bahadur Shyam Nandan Sahai. Known for his richness, Sahai Saheb later became the first Vice Chancellor of Bihar University and then also a Member of Parliament.

Bettiah

The founder of this princely state was Ugrasen, whose son Raj Singh received the title of Raja from the Mughal Emperor Akbar.

Shivhar

It is a branch of the Bettiah Raj dynasty. The overlord here was given the title of Raja by the British Government.

Badlapura

Its overlord was Rai Bahadur Ramnugraha Narayan Singh. This princely state is located in Patna district.

Riyasat of Hariji

This was the situation in the princely state of Arrah. Its overlord was Rai Bahadur Harihar Prasad Singh. His father Dewan Jaiprakash Lal had been the Diwan of Dumrao Raja.

sursund

At that time this princely state was in Muzaffarpur district. Sursand is presently in Sitamarhi district. This state was established during the time of Mithila King Raja Pratap Singh.

Palamu

About 400 years ago the Rajputs of Khabar used to rule south-east Palamu (now in Jharkhand). His capital was Palamu Garh on the banks of the Auranga River.

Sonpura

This princely state was in Palamu district. Kanar Sahi Dev of this dynasty received Japla and Lauja parganas from the emperor of Delhi as jagirs. He made his capital at Sonpura.

hive

This princely state was in Hazaribagh district. Aurangzeb gave his servant Ram Singh as a jagir in 1669 AD.

Other Princely States

Apart from the above-mentioned princely states, there were many other (about 35) small princely states in Bihar. Among them was the principality of Nirmal Kumar Jain of Ara. The princely states of Muzaffarpur Rai Bahadur Narayan Mehtha, Rai Bahadur Krishna Dev Narayan Mehtha and Umashankar Prasad were also famous. The princely state of King Prithvichandra Lal was famous in Purnia city. Under this, a small princely state in the city belonged to the Muslim landlord Asad Raja.
