Revolts challenging British rule
From 1757 AD to 1857 AD, i.e. from the Battle of Plassey to the First War of Independence, the British rule was being challenged in an organized form by the local people of Bihar. Among these challenges are the Wahhabi movement and various tribal uprisings.
Bihar, Bengal and Orissa were a combined region/state where the British established power with initial success and started the work of expansion. This area was affected before the tyranny of the British Raj and the people of the area revolted first. In this the place of Bihar is leading.
This was the initial phase of the anti-British struggle which is considered to be the phase of proto-nationalism or pre-nationalism. The second phase of the freedom struggle emerged in the form of a national movement, since the second half of the 18th century, national consciousness started awakening in the country. The role of Bihar remained important even under the second phase.
For the first time in the country, Satyagraha was successfully used under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Then the people of Bihar played an active role in various phases of Khilafat, Non-cooperation, Home Rule, Civil Disobedience Movement, and Quit India Movement. In this phase, Bihar got a distinct identity.
