History of Africa

Where the name lumbee come from?

The name "Lumbee" is thought to have originated from the Catawba word "lambe," which means "mother" or "female." The Lumbee people believe that they are descended from the Cheraw, Waccamaw, and Saponi tribes, who were all part of the Siouan language family. The name "Lumbee" was first used in official records in 1885, when the United States government created the Lumbee Indian Reservation in North Carolina.
