Historical story

Was dred Scott for or against slavery?

Dred Scott was against slavery. He was a slave who sued for his freedom in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case, which was decided by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1857. The Supreme Court ruled against Scott, holding that African Americans were not citizens of the United States and therefore could not sue in federal court. This decision was widely seen as a victory for slavery and further inflamed tensions between the North and South.
