1968: Chisholm is elected to the United States House of Representatives, becoming the first African American woman elected to Congress.
1972: Chisholm becomes the first African American woman to run for president of the United States.
1980: Chisholm retires from Congress.
1983: Chisholm is awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.
2005: Chisholm dies at the age of 80.
