What were wells used for in the middle ages?

In the Middle Ages, wells were essential sources of water for drinking, cooking, washing, and other domestic purposes. They were also used for irrigation of crops and for watering livestock. Wells were typically located in public areas such as town squares or market places, but some wealthy landowners also had private wells on their property.

Wells were usually dug by hand, and they could be very deep. Some wells were as deep as 100 feet or more. The water was drawn up from the well using a rope and bucket, or a windlass.

Wells were an important part of medieval life, and they were often the focal point of social activity. People would gather at the well to socialize and exchange news. Wells were also a place where people could meet potential romantic partners.
