Before she became famous, Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in 1797 in Upstate New York. Originally named Isabella Baumfree, she endured harsh treatment during her early years of enslavement but eventually escaped along with an infant daughter in 1826, despite the danger posed by the Fugitive Slave Act that was in effect at the time.
