Historical story

What women dressed up as a man and voted?

Susan B. Anthony

Susan B. Anthony was a suffragist, women's rights activist, and abolitionist. She was the first woman to be arrested for attempting to vote in the United States.

In 1872, Anthony dressed as a man and registered to vote in Rochester, New York. She was arrested on Election Day and charged with voting illegally. Anthony was found guilty of illegal voting and fined $100, but she refused to pay the fine.

Anthony's trial brought national attention to the issue of women's suffrage. It helped to galvanize the suffragist movement and played a significant role in the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted women the right to vote.
