The Riace Bronzes, also with a small penis
Have you ever wondered why the Greek statues representing heroes, warriors, philosophers, eminent sportsmen and in any case great characters, have a visibly small penis ?
An answer to this question (which we have probably all asked ourselves) was given by the scholar Andrew Lear, according to which the motivation lies in the fact that representing male attributes in this way was a sign of moderation and therefore of true virility, since it symbolized the ability to dominate one's lower impulses for the benefit of thoughtful, rational and intelligent actions.
Many believe Lear's thesis to be correct:men admired and praised for an extraordinary intellect could only be represented in this way.
Further proof of this is found in the way in which satyrs were represented, mythological figures dedicated to the most unbridled lust, and other men considered not exactly excellent examples of virtue, all endowed, coincidentally, with gigantic penises.
