Skulls of people who may have been beheaded by the Celts
The Celts they cut off the heads of downed enemies and kept them as trophies.
This macabre custom, described by some Roman authors, it had never found, up to now, archaeological evidence that could confirm it.
Furthermore, the Romans, as is well known, had the habit of "enriching" the stories about their enemies, with the aim of demonstrating their ferocity.
Now the discovery and analysis of some skulls found in France, however, would seem to testify to the horrible habit.
In practice, the Celts cut off the head of the defeated opponent and tied it to the neck of their horse, then mummified it and posted it on the door of the house as "trophy of victory" .
The traces of some preservative and perfumed substances found on the skulls seem to be the residues of a rudimentary embalming process.
Confirmations are awaited.
