The custom of the Celts to cut off the heads of defeated enemies and display them as trophies is attested to both by texts and by archaeological finds and representations from southern Frankish. We wanted to recognize severed heads also in the other representations of heads of Latenian art (masks), certainly wrongly, because in the overwhelming majority of cases they are divine effigies, as indicated in particular associations with various attributes:plant motifs (palmette and mistletoe leaves), signs (esse, triscèle and others) and zoomorphic elements.
