On Sunday, June 12 at 10 am, the historian Menelaos Charalambidis will conduct a walk for the victims of the Occupation. Veranzerou meeting place 3 Kaningos square.
This particular history walk (see information about the others here:https://www.athenshistorywalks.com/) focuses on the darkest side of the occupation period:collaboration with the conqueror. Through the tour of central buildings of Athens, where during the period of Occupation housed various Greek pro-Nazi and anti-communist organizations and German police services, the action of the Greek collaborators of the conqueror will be discussed.
In other places, where entertainment shops and the famous occupation roulettes operated, the ways of meeting economic and armed cooperation will be highlighted, i.e. how the profits of Greek businessmen financed the actions of Greek agents of the German security and espionage services. The stops in detail:
- 1. "Have you ever flown?" The torture in the SS offices on Merlin Street and their Greek agents. 2. Confectioneries, taverns, cinemas, bars and the "traffic roads" of the Occupation. The haunts of the Germans in Athens and the victims of their entertainment. 3. National Union of Greece. Persecuting Jews and communists from Thessaloniki to Athens. 4. Who were the "Greek Es-Es" of Klathmonos Square? 5. Occupancy roulettes. "Investing" in funds and acquaintances. 6. National Socialist Patriotic Organization. The recruitment of Greeks into the Wehrmacht and the exploitation of the Greek workforce on behalf of the Germans.
After the end of the walk, the participants will see and comment on rare photographs of occupied Athens in the National Garden.
