On Sunday, June 19 at 10 am, the historian Menelaos Charalambidis will hold a walk for the EAM rally on December 3, 1944 in Syntagma Square, which marked the beginning of the Battle of Athens, known as Decembriana. Meeting place the entrance of the Athens Conservatory on Rigillis Street.
This particular historical walk (see information about the others here:https://www.athenshistorywalks.com/) answers the central question of who fired shots during the rally, causing the start of the Decemberists. Through the testimonies of Americans, British and Greeks, journalists, soldiers and resistance fighters, who were in Syntagma Square, the developments of that Sunday morning in the center of the city, which marked modern Greek history, are examined in detail. The stops in detail:
- 1. The first dead of the day. What happened outside the house (V. Sofias 14) of Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou, as described by Minister Panagiotis Kanellopoulos? 2. "It was the most disgusting scene I have ever seen." How did a British lieutenant colonel from Giannaki's cafe (University 2) see the start of the shooting in Syntagma Square? 3. Photographing for the American magazine LIFE. Photojournalist Dmitry Kessel describes what he saw during the rally. 4. A Hittite with an automatic Schmeisser in his hands at the window of the Old Palace (today's Greek Parliament). The testimony of Nikos Farmakis. 5. "Everybody lie down." Thomas Kougiagas from ELAS among the demonstrators at the head of the rally. 6. A second lieutenant of the American army watches in amazement what is happening in Syntagma Square from the balcony of the "Great Britain" hotel.
After the end of the walk the participants will see and comment on rare photos from the battles of the Decembrians in the Zappeion garden.
