The 3rd of December 1944, the "bloody Sunday" of Greek history, still causes discussions, searches, and reflections today.
The historian and scholar of this historical period, Menelaos Charalambidis (author of a book on the Decembrians) organizes an extremely interesting livestreaming for the day that marked the history of the country in the 20th century.
Mentions features:
70,000 armed, 5,000 dead, 25,000 displaced, in just one month, is the brief account of the fiercest battle that ever took place in Athens, known as the Decembriana.
December 3 marks the 76th anniversary of the EAM rally in Syntagma Square. The rally that turned into a massacre after the police hit and was the starting point of the Decemberists.
So I thought, on the occasion of this anniversary, to talk about December. The material I will present comes from my book "December 1944. The Battle of Athens", which is the product of long-term research.
We will talk about the political correlations during the liberation of the country, about the Syntagma Square rally, the start of the shooting, the death toll, the search for a political solution and after the massacre and about the two defining political interventions of the British. And of course we will talk about the battles:Makrygianni, Goudi, Kolonaki, Kallithea, eastern districts and elsewhere. Finally we will refer to the political and military reasons for the defeat of ELAS.
After the talk and the showing of photos from the Decembers, we will open up the conversation in an attempt to answer as many questions as possible, hopefully dispelling some of the myths that have been created around December.
The live streaming will be shown here.
