On Sunday, June 5 at 10 am the historian Menelaos Charalambidis will carry out a walk for the first great battle of the Decembrians in Makrygianni and Plaka. The meeting place is the entrance of Zappeion Megaros.
This particular historical walk (see information about the others here:https://www.athenshistorywalks.com/) focuses on one of the most important battles of the Decembrians, that of the barracks of the Makrygiannis Gendarmerie Regiment, and on the three smaller and unknown battles in the Plaka area, the which began on the morning of December 6, 1944.
Participants will learn about the how ELAS attacks are carried out , the agonizing defense of the gendarmes , the decisive intervention of the British forces and the counter-distraction movements on other fronts of the battle.
The titles of the stops:
- Dead on the streets of Plaka. The ELAS attack on the building of the Gendarmerie's Transportation Department.
- British armored at Amalias and Elassites at the Pillars of Olympian Zeus. The battle in the building of the 1st Army Corps.
- "23rd (British) Tank Brigade informed, unable to take action – all engaged." The occupation of the 2nd Police Department (Plaka) by ELAS.
- December 6, 1944, time 5:45. The Makrigiannis Gendarmerie Regiment is under attack.
- "Time 9 in the morning. Enemy pressure is increasing. We are constantly being attacked from all directions." The second ELAS attack on Makrigiannis.
After the end of the walk, the participants will see and comment on rare photographs from the battles of the Decembrians, in the Zappeion garden.
