Gypsy Holocaust Memorial

When talking about Nazism and massacres, the general public automatically thinks of the Jewish holocaust. When documentaries or movies appear on the subject, it is implied that those killed in the camps are solely Jews. This is diametrically false. The Jewish people suffered the extermination of the Nazis, but they were by no means the only ones.

The gypsies were considered as untermensch -subhuman- by Nazi ideology. As a result of this, they were massively persecuted and killed. The number of victims is unknown, but the data provided by historians place it between 500,000 and 1,000,000 people.

The memorial is a small open space dominated by a large fountain in the center. the fountain with its black color refers to death, however if one gets closer, the sky is reflected in the water, which would symbolize the passage to eternal life. In the center of the fountain there is a brown triangle, which was the color with which the gypsies in the concentration camps were identified. Finally you can see different stones on the ground with names of places where the gypsy people were exterminated by the Nazis. Both concentration and extermination camps and populations appear throughout Europe.
