During World War II, MATS stood for Military Air Transport Service. It was a division of the United States Army Air Forces responsible for the transportation of troops, supplies, and equipment by air. MATS was established in June 1942 and played a vital role in the war effort, providing airlift support for operations around the world. After the war, MATS was redesignated as the Military Airlift Command (MAC) in 1948.
