Why do lists of Roman Emperors have names and dates for emperors who ruled after the fall Rome?

The Western Roman Empire did fall in 476 AD when the last emperor in Rome, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed by the Germanic warlord Odoacer. However, the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire, continued to exist for almost another thousand years until 1453 AD when it fell to the Ottoman Turks. Therefore, lists of Roman Emperors often include the emperors of the Byzantine Empire as well.
