Why did people need to ration in wwi?

Rationing during World War I was necessary for several reasons:

*Stockpiling:* Fear of shortages and uncertainty about future supplies led to panic buying and stockpiling of essential goods, further reducing the availability of goods for the general population.

*Need for self-sufficiency:* Countries involved in the war sought to become more self-sufficient in food production to reduce their reliance on imports and minimize the impact of enemy blockades. This required changes in agricultural practices and the utilization of available resources to increase domestic food production.

Rationing systems were implemented to ensure fair and equitable distribution of limited food supplies among the population. Governments issued ration cards or coupons that restricted the amount of certain goods an individual could purchase, prioritizing essential items and allocating available resources based on need. Rationing helped prevent hoarding and black marketeering and ensured that everyone had access to basic necessities during wartime scarcities.
