World War I was a conflict between primarily European powers that lasted from 1914 to 1918. It is estimated that close to 40 million casualties occurred during the war, including both military personnel and civilians. Of these casualties, nearly 20 million troops were killed on the battlefield, and the rest died from non-combat causes such as starvation, disease, or accidental injury.
