Where does the name lomax originate from?

Lomax is a habitational surname of Anglo-Saxon origin, the name refers to a place now called Lowmys, in the township of Withgill in the ancient parish of Tatham in Lancashire. The place-name is recorded as Loumac in the 12th century and as "Louhums" in the 13th century. The place name is thought to be derived from the Old English words loh (meaning a wooded glade or clearing) and macus (meaning a son, relative or disciple), thus indicating Lomax meaning "son of the glade". Lomax as a surname is first recorded in the 13th century, in the Assize Rolls of Lancashire for 1246, where a Robert de Lomax is listed.
