What grade do Americans learn to read and write?

There is no single grade in which all Americans learn to read and write. The age at which children begin formal reading instruction varies from country to country and even within different states and school districts. In the United States, most children start learning to read and write in kindergarten or first grade, at around age 5 or 6. However, some children may begin earlier or later, depending on their individual development and the educational system they are in.
