What were the committees of correspondence?

Committees of correspondence were groups of people formed in the British American colonies to facilitate the dissemination of information and coordination of resistance to British policies and laws that led to the American Revolution. The first Committee of Correspondence was established in Boston in 1764 following the passage of the Sugar Act, and eventually more than 80 committees of correspondence were established throughout the Thirteen Colonies. These committees played a vital role in shaping public opinion, facilitating communication among different resistance groups, and ultimately leading to the American Revolution.
