What is the origin of surname Clarke?

The surname Clarke derives from the Middle English and Old French word "clerk," which was originally a title given to a person employed in the church specifically a priest or someone educated enough to read and write in a time when literacy was the preserve of the clergy. As trade and administrative duties expanded so did the use of the title which gradually became hereditary and was applied to an individual who worked as a clerk in an early court of justice, or one who could read or write.
