Why is Sacajawea on the dollar coin?

Sacajawea is not on the dollar coin, she is on the $1 coin. The decision to place Sacajawea on the $1 coin was made in 1999, as part of an effort to increase the number of women and minorities depicted on U.S. currency. Sacajawea was chosen because of her significant contributions to the Lewis and Clark Expedition and her role as a symbol of the contributions of Native Americans to the history of the United States.
