When the farmers did not pay the tax, the government started its aggressive actions. The government imposed a tax of Rs 700 on a farmer and confiscated his land worth Rs 40,000 for non-payment of tax. Another farmer had 33 acres of fertile land which was valued at around Rs 15,000. The government seized that land and sold it to another person for only Rs 161.
Another land worth Rs 30,000 was sold for only Rs 151. Similarly, the milch animals of the farmers were confiscated and sold at the cost of cows. After this, the government servants entered the houses and opened the plows and bullocks of the farmers. On this the farmers collectively decided to face the government servants. They locked their animals in their homes. When government servants were seen coming towards the village, people started playing drums, drums and conch shells.
Hearing these voices, men and women of the village would gather with sticks. It became impossible for government servants to enter the villages. On this, the government issued an order that no person would play drums, drums and conch shells. When Sardar Patel came to know about this order of the government, he got a statement published in the newspapers that the government with shells and bullets was scared of the sound of drums and drums. Sardar Patel appealed to the people to keep playing drums and drums and don't pay rent.
The Bardoli movement started gaining headlines in national newspapers. The eyes of the whole country were fixed on the Bardoli movement. This was a wonderful experiment against the Ghori government which was going to happen in the country for the first time. In front of this movement, all the movements till now in the country faded away.
The Governor of Bombay had not even dreamed that a small order of his would endanger the prestige of the entire Ghori government, but by now the arrow had run out of quiver. It had to have some side effect. That's why the government started luring some people. Coming to these temptations, some farmers left the agitators and started mixing their voices in the voice of the government.
The movement farmers wanted that these traitors should be taught a lesson, but this time also Sardar Patel reiterated the old saying that do not fight among themselves. Put all the power in fighting the government. On this the farmers decided that those who are with the government, they should be boycotted so that the disease of betrayal does not spread to other people.
On this Patel told the people that it is the right of the society to boycott the wrong person but violence should not be done against him. If that person invites someone for food in a family function, of course no one goes to his house, but if he falls ill, every person in the village goes to his house to serve him.
