General condition

The ancient site of Wat Tra Kuan is located in the Sukhothai city wall. in the area on the north side of the city in the Sukhothai Historical Park Located away from the door of the royal court. north city gate Come to the south about 400 meters to the west of the temple adjacent to the tank of Tra Kuan. Located in the southeast of Ta Pha Daeng Shrine or Phra Suea Mueang Shrine.

Sukhothai is located on the plains of the river (Terrace) in the eastern foothills of the Pratak Mountains. The sediment deposited thus consists of soil, gravel, sand that is carried by the water from the mountains.

From the foothills, the area has a slope to the east to the Yom River, which is approximately 11 kilometers east of the ancient city. Klong Sao Ho which is a straight stream on the south side and Mae Lamphan Canal on the north and east side of the city and flows into the Yom River at the present Sukhothai Province.

The area between the ancient city of Sukhothai and the Yom River is a marsh. There are frequent floods and some places have been trapped in water for months. Therefore, it may be one of the reasons why Sukhothai Old City is not located on the riverbank plain.

King Rama VI (1977:36-37) surveyed Wat Tra Kuan in 1907 and found a temple that the villagers called Wat Seil or Wat Ta Khuan, assuming that the correct name of the temple was Wat Tra Kuan, which was Khmer means morning glory in Thai.

The name of Wat Tra Kuan appears in the inscription of Wat Sorasak. The archaeological site that appears within the temple is a circular bell pagoda, brickwork, and an ordination hall at the front or east side.

Information from the inscription of Wat Sorasak makes further assumptions that The circular bell chedi that appears in Wat Traguan Should be at least in the middle of the 20th Buddhist century.

While Ajarn Kongdej Prapatthong and Prof. Dr. Sakchai Saising (2004 :114-117) studied the characteristics of art and history and proposed that Buddha images in this category of Wat Trakuan. It is not older than the 20th Buddhist century or may be during the 21st Buddhist century.
