14. Temples of Jakarta

The actual name of the city of Jakarta is Jaykarta. It is located in West Java and is the capital of Indonesia. 17 major Hindu temples have been found in Jakarta, including the huge Shiva temple built in the ninth century AD, the Tirtha Empul temple built in 926 AD, the Goa Gajah (Shiva temple) built in the 11th century, the Mata temple of Besaikh built in the 14th century and 1633 AD. Temples of Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta city is located in Central Java. In February 2010, the remains of two temples were found on the premises of a private Muslim university located in Yogyakarta when the university began excavations to build a library near a mosque built there. These temples are about 1100 years old and are huge and unique.

Such temples have never been seen before in the history of Indonesia. In these temples the idols of Lord Ganesha have been found along with the Shivalingas of Lord Shiva. In the excavation done at another place, the Archaeological Department found the statue of Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva. This statue of Nandi is quite different from the normal Nandi idols and is not as wide as other idols.

Singhsari Shiva Temple

The Singhsari Shiva Temple, built in the 13th century, is situated at a place called Singhsari in East Java. This huge Shiva temple is famous all over the world for its grandeur. There is a huge statue of Lord Shiva in the temple which is visited by a large number of devotees every day. All the festivals related to Lord Shiva are celebrated with great pomp.
