23. Development of the Gothic Style of the Churches

In the eleventh-twelfth century AD, a new style of cathedral construction developed in Western Europe called the Gothic style. The size of the churches in this style is kept very large. In this, the load of large and heavy roofs is placed on the panels outside the main building. Thin pillars are made inside the main building. The onlooker is astonished to see that such thin pillars are supporting this huge and heavy roof. Arabic-style notched arches are made in these churches.

There is a huge high-rise tower above the building. The windows of these churches have stained glass on which beautiful pictures were made. In this way the Gothic style cathedral looks amazing and beautiful. The faith of the beholder starts flying in the sky, bowing down to religion.

In that age of turmoil, chaos and ignorance, the Gothic cathedral looked as mysterious as a lotus growing in the mud. A large number of Gothic-style churches were built simultaneously in France, northern Italy, Germany and England. It cannot be said exactly who started their construction and who was continuously advancing them.

It is estimated that behind the construction of these churches, less state power and more people power were working. The Gothic cathedral seemed to be a common manifestation of architecture, painting and sculpture in semi-civilized Europe. It seemed that on the one hand these churches were carrying the prayers of the earth to the heaven, and on the other hand the heaven itself was tilting towards the earth to see these churches.

Later in Europe, town halls and parliament buildings also began to be built in the Gothic style. The old Parliament building of England which was burnt in the fire, and the new Parliament building are also very beautiful examples of Gothic style. When the Arabs began to devastate Europe, they destroyed many churches. Many cities of Europe were also destroyed in these attacks and got absorbed in the cheeks of time.

In Cologne, Germany, in Milan in Italy and in Chartre, France, huge churches of the Gothic style can still be seen, but there is not a single large cathedral of this style in Rome. There is a large cathedral of this style in Venice. Churches of different styles from the Gothic style were also being built in this era. In the city of Venice, Italy, the Church of St. Mark was built in this era. It is built in the Byzantine (Byzantine) style. It has very beautiful mosaic work.
