Mouton, Georges, Count of Lobau

February 21, 1770 (Phalsbourg) - November 27, 1838 (Paris)

Mouton, Georges, Count of Lobau

Elected lieutenant by the volunteers of Meurthe, captain in November 1792, aide-de-camp to General Meynier a year later, Mouton left the Army of the Rhine in 1795 for Italy and served there on Joubert's staff. He distinguished himself at the siege of Genoa but was not promoted to colonel until 1803. Brigadier general at the beginning of 1805 and aide-de-camp to Napoleon, he served with him in the campaigns of 1805-1807, was seriously wounded at Friedland. General of division soon after, he left for Spain, where he distinguished himself in Medina del Rio Seco (July 14, 1808). Recalled in November by the Emperor, he resumed his duties as aide-de-camp with him and followed him in the campaign against Austria, accomplished a feat of arms at Landshut (April 21) by crossing the bridge in flames at the head of his grenadiers, charged with bayonets and recaptured Essling with the fusiliers of the guard (May 22, 1809), covered the retreat to Lobau Island and had a bullet through his hand. Comte de Lobau a week later, he is in Wagram. He follows the Emperor to Russia and returns with him to Paris. Aide-major général of the guard in July 1813, he was taken prisoner when Dresden surrendered (November 11, 1813). Reunited with Napoleon during the Hundred Days, he was once again his aide-de-camp and committed a final act of heroism at Waterloo, covering the army's retreat with a stoic defense of Plancenoit. He was captured on June 19, 1815 while trying to rally the stragglers. A fierce Republican, Mouton had only reluctantly accepted the "trivia" of the coronation. He does not hide his hostility to the Bourbons. Proscribed until the end of 1818, he was elected by Meurthe in 1828 and sat in the Chamber of Deputies among the liberal opponents. Louis-Philippe will make him Marshal on July 30, 1831 and Peer of France on June 27, 1833. Esteemed for his bravery, his composure, his loyalty, Mouton appears on the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile.
