Lyrics to the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic

Be an unfolded canopy of light.
Under the wide expanse of these skies
This rebel corner that the past
Come redeem from the most vile labeus!
Be an anthem of glory that speaks
Of hope, of a new future!
With visions of triumphs pack
Who fighting for him will arise!

Freedom! Freedom!
Spread your wings over us!
From the fights in the storm
Let us hear your voice!

We don't even believe that slaves once
Have there been in such a noble Country...
Today the crimson flash of dawn
Find brothers, not hostile tyrants.
We're all the same! to the future
We will know, united, to take
Our august banner which, pure,
Shine, onwards, from the Homeland on the altar!

Freedom! Freedom!
Spread your wings over us!
From the fights in the storm
Let us hear your voice!

If you need brave breasts
Let there be blood on our banner,
Living blood of the hero Tiradentes
He christened this daring pavilion!
Messengers of peace, peace we want,
Love is our strength and power
But from the war in the supreme trances
Here's to see us fight and win!

Freedom! Freedom!
Spread your wings over us!
From the fights in the storm
Let us hear your voice!

From Ipiranga it is necessary that the cry
Be a superb cry of faith!
Brazil has already emerged liberated,
On the royal purples standing.
Hey, Brazilians, onward!
Blonde greens, let's reap the benefits!
May our country be triumphant,
Free land of free brothers!

Freedom! Freedom!
Spread your wings over us!
From the fights in the storm
Let us hear your voice!

Origin of the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic

After the proclamation of the Republic, the government wanted to change several symbols and proposed a contest to choose the new national anthem. However, in the face of resistance, Marechal Deodoro chose to adopt the new anthem as the Republic anthem and keep the old one as the national anthem.

In order to create symbols of the new republican identity, the provisional government opens a contest to elect the official version of the National Anthem. This is held on January 20 of the same year, at the Teatro Lírico in Rio de Janeiro.

The winners were José Joaquim de Campos da Costa de Medeiros e Albuquerque, author of the lyrics, and Leopoldo Miguez, composer. This one was written in far-fetched and boastful language and neither the lyrics nor the melody won over the military and the population.

Despite winning the contest, the music by Leopoldo Miguez and the lyrics by Medeiros and Albuquerque were not used to represent the nation. The military and the population felt identified by the melody of the old national anthem, which had been sung since 1822.

Thus, music and poetry were used to be the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic, through Decree n° 171, signed by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca on January 20, 1890.

However, it fell into oblivion and is rarely used in official ceremonies.
