The New Republic

Brazil entered a process of redemocratization from the elections that took place in 1985, when the military power was extinguished and Tancredo Neves was elected to the position of President of the Republic.

All political parties, after the defeat of the proposal in the form of an amendment to hold direct elections to elect the President of the Republic, started several movements to decide which possible candidates.

Paulo Maluf was launched as a candidate by the Democratic Party (PDS), however, some party components such as Marcos Maciel, José Sarney and Aureliano Chaves did not receive the Party's nomination well. Because of this, a new party was created, the PFL (Party of the Liberal Front)

Producing a democratic alliance, the PFL declared political support for the PMDB, which had launched Tancredo Neves' candidacy for the presidency of the republic. Based on this support, it was defined, through an agreement, that José Sarney would be a candidate for vice president. So-called left-wing parties, such as the Workers' Party and the Communist Party, did not join.

From November 15, 1985, the cycle of the military dictatorship in Brazil ended, the Electoral College in Brasília declared the candidate Tancredo Neves elected to the position of President of the Republic. The day before taking office, March 13, Tancredo was in very poor health and was hospitalized. His health did not improve and his condition worsened. Tancredo was transferred to a hospital in São Paulo, but it was no use, he died on April 21, without even taking office. Deputy José Sarney took office and started the so-called “New Republic”.
