History of Asia

Post-Gupta Dynasty, Krishnagupta Dynasty

During the decadent period of Emperor Gupta dynasty, many local dynasties that ruled in different regions of North India under him began to increase their power to replace the Guptas. Some feudal dynasties started dreaming of becoming an imperial power by establishing authority over Magadha and its adjoining areas. Among such feudatories there was also the post-Gupta dynasty of Magadha and Malwa.

Historical Sources

Many inscriptions of the rulers of the post-Gupta dynasty, who played an active role in North Indian politics in the second half of the 6th century AD, have been found on the basis of which their history can be built. is.

Afford Records: The Afsad inscription of Adityasen is the most important of the records that publish the history of the post-Gupta dynasty. This article has been found from a place called Afsad located in Gaya district of Bihar. In this, the historical events of the reign of eight rulers from the period of Krishnagupta to Adityasen, the first ruler of this dynasty, are found, such as Krishnagupta, Harshagupta, Jeevitagupta I, Kumaragupta, Damodargupt, Mahasengupta, Madhavgupta and Adityasen. In this way, from this article to Adityasen the genealogy of the Uttar-Gupta rulers is not only known, but it also throws light on the Uttaragupta-Maukhari relationship.

Inscription of Shahpur and Mander: An account of Adityasen's period has been received from a place called Shahpur in Patna district. The date of this article is Harsh Samvat 66 (672 AD). This article helps in determining the date of the later Guptas. An inscription of Adityasen has also been found from the temple of Bhagalpur district of Bihar province. This article reveals that his Mahadevi Konadevi had built a pond for the welfare of the subjects.

Mangrao Records: This article is from the period of Vishnugupta, the tenth ruler of this dynasty, in which his titles 'Maharajadhiraj' and 'Parameshwar' are found. The author of this article was a person named Devadatta, which was engraved by Sutradhar Kuladitya.

Devvarnark inscription: This inscription has been found in the period of Jivitgupta II from a place called Devvarnark in Shahabad (Ara) district of Bihar province. The credit of bringing this inscription to light in 1880 AD goes to Mr. Cunningham. This inscription gives information regarding the history of the last three rulers of the Uttar-Gupta dynasty – Devagupta, Vishnugupta and Jeevitagupta II.

Vaidyanath Temple Temple: This article from the time of Adityasen was brought from a temple in Mandar Parvat in Bhagalpur district. Earlier the idol of Lord Nrihari was installed in this temple, but later a person named Balabhadra got the idol of Varaha installed in this temple. In this article Adityasen is called 'ruler of the earth till the sea ' It is said that he had performed the rituals of Ashwamedha and many other yagyas.

Thus a combined perusal of the Afsadha and Devvarnark inscriptions gives knowledge of the unbroken history of the eleven rulers of this dynasty. Since Krishnagupta was the first and Jeevitagupta II the last ruler of this dynasty, the entire history of this dynasty is more or less known, although there are still many such information regarding this dynasty, which remains controversial.

Origin of Post-Gupta Dynasty

The word 'Gupta' is associated with the names of most of the rulers of this dynasty. On this basis some scholars have expressed the possibility that these Chakravartis may have been related to the Gupta dynasty. But this seems unlikely because if he had been associated with the Chakravarti Guptas, he would have mentioned it in his writings. Again the word 'Gupta' is not even found at the end of the names of all the kings of this dynasty, such as Adityasen.

Krishnagupta, the founder of the Uttar-Gupta dynasty, in the Afshad inscription 'Sadvansh ' It has been told. The only inference that can be drawn from this is that he belonged to some high clan. More than this, no information is available regarding the origin of the post-Guptas.

Historians have referred to this dynasty as the later Gupta dynasty or the Uttar-Gupta dynasty to distinguish it from the Chakravarti Guptas. Some historians also object to this nomenclature. According to Sudhakar Chattopadhyay, this dynasty is named 'Krishnagupta dynasty' in the name of the founder of this dynasty, Krishnagupta. Should be said, but the post-Gupta dynasty is now more accepted and valid among historians for this dynasty.

In fact, the post-Gupta dynasty was a feudal dynasty that ruled under the emperor Guptas, because the first ruler of this dynasty, Krishnagupta, has been given only the title 'Nripa' and his successor Harshagupta. Only the respectful word 'Shri' has been used with his name. Adityasen was the most powerful ruler of this dynasty.

The original place of the post-Gupta dynasty ( Original place of of Post-Gupta Dynasty)

Where was the original-place of the Uttar-Guptas? This topic remains controversial even today. The records of the later rulers of this dynasty, Adityasen, Vishnugupta and Jeevitagupta II, have been received from the Magadha region only. On this basis Fleet, Rakhaldas Banerjee and B.P. Historians like Sinha are of the view that Magadha must have been the original place of this dynasty.

Contrast D.C. Ganguly, R.K. Mookerjee, C.V. Many scholars like Vaidya, Hornley and Raychaudhuri believe that the people of this dynasty were originally residents of Malwa who became the rulers of Magadha in the post Harsh period. Scholars who consider Malwa to be the original place of the Uttar-Guptas argue that in Harshacharita, Madhavgupta is mentioned as the son of Malvaraj (Malvarajputrau ), while in the Afsadha inscription Madhavgupta is said to be the son of Mahasengupta. In both the sources, Madhavgupta is described as a friend of Harsha. According to the Harshacharita, he was Harsha's child-master, while according to the Afsadha inscription, he aspired for the constant companionship of Harshadeva. Seeing these two sources together proves the uniformity of Malavraj of Harshacharita and Mahasengupta, the grandfather of Adityasen. It is noteworthy that according to the Devvarnarka inscription of Jeevitagupta II, Magadha was previously ruled by the Maukhari kings Sharvavarma and Avantivarma, who were contemporary of Damodargupt and Mahasengupta, the rulers of the post-Gupta dynasty.

There is also a possibility that the region of Magadha may have been under Ishanvarma, the father of Sharvavarma, who was a contemporary of the post-Gupta dynasty ruler Kumaragupta, as Ishanvarma's Haraha inscription refers to Ishanavarma in the Andhras. He is said to be the conqueror of the Shuliks and the Gaudas. The conquest of Gaur is not possible without the possession of Magadha region. Thus, it seems more reasonable to consider the region of eastern Malwa as the starting place of the Uttar-Guptas.

Political history of Post-Gupta Dynasty

According to Rameshchandra Majumdar, the history of the Maukharis and the Uttar Guptas are similar in many respects. The history of both starts at about the same time. Both were feudatories of the emperor Guptas till about 550 AD and both became independent as soon as they fell.

Krishnagupta

According to the Asfadh inscription, the first ruler of the Uttar-Gupta dynasty was Krishnagupta (480-500 AD). It is difficult to definitively determine the reign of Krishnagupta as the inscriptions are non-historical, however, the Haraha inscription of Ishanvarma of 554 AD provides some help in this regard. Ishanvarma was a contemporary of the North-Gupta dynasty king Kumaragupta. His reign can be roughly determined between AD 540 and AD 560. Since these three rulers ruled before Kumaragupta I, Harshagupta and Krishnagupta, and if the average reign of twenty years is fixed for each ruler, then the reign of Krishnagupta can be placed between about 480 AD to 500 AD.

Krishnagupta was named 'Nrup in Afshad inscription ' (same stable unnato giririv srikrishnagupto nripa , At this time, the Gupta emperor Budhgupta was ruling, whose political influence was definitely widespread till the Malwa region. It was during the reign of Budhgupta that the Huna king Torman invaded western India. The records of the first year of Toman's rule have been obtained from Eran. From this it seems that at some time between 490 AD and 510 AD, Toman occupied the Malwa region. He appointed Dhanyavishnu, the cousin of feudal matravishnu, who ruled the Eran region of Budhgupta, as the administrator of this region, but this power of the Huns in the Malwa region did not remain undisturbed, as it is known from the inscription of Bhanugupta of 510 AD, obtained from Eran itself. It happens that the great warrior Bhanugupta fought a fierce battle in Eran, in which his friend Gopraja got Veergati and his wife had become sati along with the dead body of her husband. Probably Bhanugupta and Gopraja did this war against the Hun king Toorman.

Evidently, the political landscape of the Malwa region was changing rapidly, due to which feudal clans such as Parivrajaka, Uchkalpa and Dhanyavishnu of Eran region of central India lost their allegiance to the Gupta emperors. It was getting more suspicious. It is possible that taking advantage of these circumstances, Krishnagupta may have established his own small kingdom in eastern Malwa. According to Raychaudhuri, he also fought against Yashodharman, but this is doubtful.

The Afsdh article states that there were thousands of elephants in his army (asiddanti sahasragadhakatko ), he was the conqueror of innumerable enemies (Asankhyaripu Pratapjayina ) and was always surrounded by scholars (Vidyadharadhyasith ), but it should be treated as a formal compliment only.

Harshagupta (Harshgupta)

Krishnagupta was succeeded by his son Harshagupta (500-520 AD), who was the second ruler of the post-Gupta dynasty. According to the Afsad inscription, 'He is the winner of fierce battles' (gheranamahavanam likhitmiv jay shladhyamaviddhano ), 'Was to remove blemishes and remove darkness' (Gross:Kalankless:Dhatimirstoyedheh , At this time the Gupta emperor Narasimhagupta 'Baladitya' Was embroiled in a conflict with the Huns.

Some scholars speculate that Narasimha Gupta's rule was confined to the Magadha region, while Vainyagupta probably established his independent kingdom in the region of Bengal and possibly Bhanugupta in the Eran region. Was struggling against the Huns.

Harshagupta appears to be a ruler of feudal status, but it is difficult to say whether he was ruling under the then Gupta emperor Narasimhagupta or Bhanugupta, or whether he had accepted the suzerainty of the Huns. . Perhaps he was also a contemporary of Yashodharman of Malwa, but there is no information about the relationship between the two.

Harshagupta's sister Harshagupta was married to Adityavarma, the second ruler of the Maukhari dynasty was. It is clear from this that during the reign of Harshagupta, there was a friendly relationship between Uttargupta and Maukhari princes. In fact, both these princes were development oriented. To fulfill their political ambitions, they resorted to mutual marital relations to strengthen friendship.

Jeeevagupta I

Harshagupta was succeeded by his son Jivitagupta I (520-550 AD), who was the third ruler of the Uttar Gupta dynasty. In the Afsad inscription, he is called 'Kshitishchudamani ' has been awarded the title. According to the article 'he was like a burning fever for the enemies of the coastal green region and the adjoining cold region of the Himalayas .'

It seems that political anarchy prevailed in North India as a result of Huna invasion of Gupta-kingdom and Digvijay of Malwa ruler Yashodharman. The majestic sun of the Gupta emperors was setting and the influence of the Gupta power was coming to an end in the areas of northern Bengal including the Himalayan border areas. Jeevitagupta I seems to have participated in campaigns against the Himalayan and coastal revolts of Bengal as a feudatory of the contemporary Gupta emperor, probably Vishnugupta. There is also a possibility that the contemporary Maukhari Naresh Ishwarvarma also supported him in this campaign, because Jaunpur inscription It is said that Ishwarvarma conquered the areas up to the Himalayas in the north Was. These conquests resulted in an increase in the political influence of the later Guptas during the reign of Jivitagupta. The Afsad inscription states that 'his might was as supernatural as the sea-skiing by Pawanputra Hanuman.

Jeevitgupta's sister Upgupta's marriage to Maukhari Naresh Eshwarvarma which confirms the cordial friendship between the two dynasties.

Kumargupta

Jivatagupta I was succeeded by his son Kumaragupta (550-555 AD).

(Damodargupta)

(Mahasengupta)

(Devgupta I)

(Madhavgupta)

(Adityasen)

(Devgupta II)

(Vishnugupta)

(Jeevagupta II)
