Chapter – 13 – Indian Culture and Influence of Ramayana and Mahabharata in the Epic Period (a)

Whether rich or poor, sad or happy, innocent or faulty, friend is the greatest support of man.

– Valmiki Ramayana.

Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas have importance in Indian folk life for centuries. These texts are given the same respect as the Vedas. The Ramayana is the primordial poetry of Indians, composed by Maharishi Valmiki in Sanskrit. The Mahabharata was composed by Maharishi Vedavyasa in Sanskrit. There is a difference of centuries between Ramayana and Mahabharata, but their creation period is collectively called epic period. The creation of the Puranas also continued in the interval of centuries, but their period of creation is also called the Purana period as a whole.

Background of the descent of the epics

In the Upanishads, the ostentatious rituals and sacrifices of Vedic religion were opposed and the principles of Nirguna Brahma, Karmavad, Moksha etc. It was very difficult for ordinary people. For this reason the religious aspirations of the common man could not be fulfilled by the knowledge of the Upanishads.

The Upanishads told about the new means of interviewing Brahman, meditation, nididhyasana and samadhi etc. to attain salvation, but their adherence was also not possible for the common man. Nor was it possible for him to leave home and become Parivrajak and try to attain Brahma. For this reason, to fulfill the religious aspirations of the common people, certain new religious schools were born under Vedic religion, which preserved the basic ideology of the Upanishads, but their external forms were significantly different.

Some of these were theistic religions which believed in Vedas, God and Brahmins, but instead of ritualistic rituals, they considered some specific form of God Shiva, Vishnu, Durga etc. as their worship and devotion was the only means to please their idol Used to believe There were other atheistic religions and sects which rejected the validity of the Vedas, theism and the supremacy of the Brahmins and considered proper conduct as the only way to get rid of the world and the bondage of karma.

Many sects arose under theist and atheist ideologies, most of which proved to be short-lived, but the four religions were successful in making their deepest penetration in the public mind. Of these, Vaishnavism and Shaivism were under the astik ideology and Jainism and Buddhism were under the atheist ideology.

The seed of Vaishnavism was available in the Vedas under theistic ideology. In the epic period, this seed sprouted and started taking the shape of a beautiful plant. Rama is described in the Ramayana and Shri Krishna in the Mahabharata as the Yug-Purusha and he is declared an incarnation of Vishnu. In the form of Rama and Krishna, the universal form of Bhakta-Vatsal God appeared before the public, who was almighty, hostile, merciful, listening to the calls of the devotees, destroying the wicked and establishing religion. In both these texts, the qualities and characteristics of God were represented through various stories so that faith in God could arise in the common man.

Impact of Ramayana on Indian Culture

Shriram's period

According to mythological beliefs, Lord Rama was born in Treta Yuga. According to Hindu beliefs, the total duration of Treta Yuga was 12,96,000 years. In this era, Lord Vishnu had three incarnations – Vamana, Parashurama and Shri Ram. Of these, Rama was the third who was the seventh incarnation of Vishnu. This was followed by the Dwapara Yuga, which lasted 8,64,000 years. After Dwapar BC Kali Yuga started in 3,102.

If Lord Shri Ram is considered in the last block of Treta, then he was born at least 8,69,119 years ago from today. Scientists do not accept this date because till then human civilization had not developed on earth. According to some scientific researches, Lord Rama was born in BC. 5,114 i.e. about 7,133 years ago. Western scientists have estimated the Ram Setu between Rameshwaram and Sri Lanka to be 7000 years old on the basis of carbon dating.

Creation period of Ramayana

Scholars have presented different assumptions about the actual composition period of Ramayana and Mahabharata, but most Indian and Western scholars consider the composition of Ramayana and Mahabharata to be before Buddha. Of these, the Ramayana was composed before the Mahabharata. Maharishi Valmiki is mentioned in Mahabharata.

In the thirty-fourth verse of the 109th canto of Ayodhya Kanda of Ramayana, Buddha is clearly mentioned in this way - 'Yatha hi chorah and hi buddhastathagatam nastikamatra viddhi.' That is, 'Buddha means one who is an atheist and a mere intellectual, he deserves punishment like a thief.'

Certainly this verse has been added to the Ramayana much later, but on the basis of this statement, some scholars believe that the Ramayana was composed after the appearance of Buddha. McDonnell traces the original form of the Ramayana to BC. 500 has been accepted. Noted Western scholar Weber mentioned in Ramayana 'Yavan' On the basis of the word, the Ramayana was written after the Yavana invasion i.e. BC. It is believed to have been composed in the fourth century.

That is, according to both of these, Ramayana was composed after Buddha. According to Winternitsa, the original composition of this text was in BC. It took place in the fourth century and its final form was almost certain in the second century AD.

The influence of Ramayana can be seen on many early texts of Buddhist literature. Dasaratha Jatak But this effect is most visible and the story of Shravan Kumar is also mentioned in this person. According to the famous scholar Silva Levy Certainly indebted to Valmiki because the description of Jambu Island in this text matches the description of Ramayana in many parts.

In the Saddharma Smriti anecdote, rivers, seas, countries and islands have been addressed with the same names by which they are mentioned Valmiki Ramayana I have been. Mithila in Ayodhya Kand of Ramayana and Vishala There are mentions of two different cities called Vaishali, when by the time of Buddha both the cities were united as Vaishali. Therefore, there is no doubt that the Ramayana is the creation of the former Buddha.

Ramayana was composed before Mahabharata. Not only Maharishi Valmiki and Ramayana have been mentioned in the Mahabharata, but places related to Rama have been accepted as pilgrimages. The Indian geographical boundaries described in the Ramayana are much less than the Mahabharata period India. In contrast, the Mahabharata and any of its characters are not mentioned anywhere in the Ramayana. Therefore, Ramayana is a composition before Mahabharata.

Maharishi Panini the period of BC Fifth century has been perfected. Everywhere in Ramayana undeniable Experiments are found which prove that Ramayana was composed before the appearance of Panini. Dr. Yakobi based it on the language of the Ramayana, in BC. 800 to BC It is believed to have been composed between 600. According to Yakobi, the first and seventh Kanda of Ramayana are projected. The mention of the Buddha and the Yavanas who came in them is not in the original Ramayana. The parts of the Ramayana in which Rama is represented as Purushottama were certainly written before Buddha.

Introduction of Maharishi Valmiki

Maharishi Valmiki was the author of 'Ramayana'. The main goal of this book was to present the highest ideal of human character. Maharishi Valmiki is considered the representative poet of Aryan culture. Stories about Valmiki are found in Mahabharata and Puranas. In these texts Valmiki is referred to as 'Bhargava' That is, it is said to have originated in the Bhrigu dynasty. 'Ramopakhyan' of Mahabharata Its author is also called Bhargava.

According to one legend, Valmiki was a Brahmin by birth, but by living with the Kirats, he became a dacoit named 'Ratnakar'. Once he blocked the path of Devarshi Narada etc. to rob the seven sages. Those sages told Valmiki that go and ask the family members for whom you accumulate sins regularly, whether they are ready to share this sin of yours or not!

On this Valmiki tied the Saptarishis like Narad etc. to the tree and went to his house and asked the same question. Valmiki's family replied that it is your duty to maintain the family and the family is not a participant in your sin. Hearing this answer, dispassion arose in Valmiki's mind. Narada advised him to chant Ram-Rama, but Valmiki could not speak Ram-Ram and started chanting 'Mara-Mara'.

Thus 'Mara-Mara' automatically became 'Ram-Ram'. After doing penance by remaining motionless for many years, termites made their home i.e. 'Valmik' on his body. Pleased with his intense penance, Brahma ji appeared to him and instructing him to come out of 'Valmeek', said that you have taken second birth due to penance in Valmik. From today you will be known as Valmiki. According to some Puranas, before this his name was 'Chyavan', but in Skanda Purana, before becoming a sage, his name has been given as 'Agnisarman'.

After becoming a sage, Valmiki started his spiritual life. Many people became his disciples. Rishi Bharadwaj was also his disciple. Once he was returning after taking a bath in the river with Bharadwaj, when on the way he saw a huntsman, hunting with his arrows, the Krauncha birds. One of the birds died and his companion started crying bitterly. Valmiki's heart was filled with compassion and a verse burst from his mouth -

Ma Nishad Pratishthan Tvamagamru Shaswati Sama.

yatkraunchmithunadekamvadhih kammohitam..

Meaning- O Nishad! May you never find peace, for you killed one of this crunchy pair, who was fascinated by sex, without any crime.

He was very surprised to see the words that came out of his mouth suddenly taking the form of a verse, but he was also saddened to give such a big curse to Nishad in anger. Then Supreme Father Brahma appeared and said- 'There is no reason to repent. This shloka will become the cause of your fame. In this verse you compose the character of Rama.' According to the orders of Brahmaji, Valmiki composed of twenty four thousand verses 'Ramayana' Created the epic called.

According to a mention in Valmiki's Ramayana, once Valmiki asked Narada, who was engrossed in austerity and self-study, that who is such a great man in this world who can be considered ideal in ethics and might? Narada narrated the essence of Ramakatha to him, Valmiki composed the Ramayana by shlokasing the same story. It seems from this account that some stories related to the life of Shri Ram were prevalent in that period, Valmiki composed the epic poem by making them the basis.

According to a mention in Ramayana, Maharishi Valmiki gave shelter to pregnant Sita in his ashram after Shri Ram abandoned his wife Sita. Sita had two twin sons in Valmiki's ashram. Maharishi named those children as 'Kush' and 'Luv'. Both the sons of Sita grew up in Valmiki's ashram.

It was Valmiki who taught Luv and Kush when they grew up, to recite the Ramayana composed by them. Luv and Kush started singing Ramayana from place to place. While Shri Ram was performing the Ashwamedha Yagya, Kush and Lava caught the horse of the Yagya and they reached Ayodhya. There also he sang the Ramayana. Sri Rama was mesmerized by his singing and Rama came to know that he was not Rishikumar but the son of Srimaram and Sita. Shri Ram called Sita to him.

Valmiki himself attended the Rama-sabha with Sita and he testified to Sita's chastity. By witnessing his thousand years of penance and truthfulness, he requested Shri Ram to accept Sita. At the behest of Valmiki, Goddess Sita entered the land by taking the oath of righteousness. In relation to Maharishi Valmiki, only this story is available.

Present form of Ramayana

The present form of Ramayana consists of seven chapters namely Balkand, Ayodhyakand, Aranyakand, Kishkindhakand, Sunderkand, Lankakand and Uttarkand and 24,000 verses. Scholars believe that there were only five Kandas in the original Ramayana from Ayodhyakand to Lankakand, Balkand and Uttarkand were added later.

The composition style of Balkand and Uttarkand is different from other chapters and many statements of these chapters do not even match with the other five chapters. Valmiki has considered Rama as a great man of his era in the original Ramayana text of five chapters and has portrayed his character in that form, but in Balkand and Uttarkand, Rama is revered as an incarnation of Vishnu. It is clear from this that both these cases belong to the later era.

In terms of text, four authentic versions of Valmiki Ramayana are available - Uddhya Path, Dakshinatya Path, Gaudiya Path and Western Path.
