Margaret of France (1553 – 1615)

Daughter of Henry II and Catherine de Medici, Marguerite de Valois married at the age of 19 the Protestant Henri III of Navarre (other negotiations had been started with Philip II of Spain and Henri de Guise). This marriage which was to seal a reconciliation between Catholics and Protestants ends a few days later in a bloodbath (Saint-Barthélemy August 24, 1572). A neglected woman, she chose opposition to her husband, who had become king of France, by joining the Catholic League (1585). She will end up in exile for 20 years in Auvergne. After her return from exile, she played a very important role in the cultural development of the court thanks to her patronage. Marguerite de Valois is made famous by the book by Alexandre Dumas:"Queen Margot", interpreted on screen by Isabelle Adjani. The queen is known for her many lovers, including Henri de Guise who was one of the first.
