What was the connection between a lord and vassal?

Feudal contract (also called feudal bond, feudal relationship or feudal tie) was a form of contract in medieval Europe which established the relationship between the lord (or liege lord) and his vassal. The vassal would make a personal commitment and promise of fidelity to his lord, and the lord would typically grant the vassal rights, usually land, in exchange. Vassals were often knights while those who were granted non-landed rights, such as office or revenue from an estate, were more likely called retainers.
